Hank Odell
I am a writer, poet, musician, multimedia artist, political organizer, amateur linguistics enthusiast, and homo sapien. I attended Sarah Lawrence College for four years and graduated with a Bachelors of Arts.
As an academic, I have written on a wide arrange of topics, particularly under the umbrellas of politics and literature. I have studied and written about the poetry of Mao Zedong, the rise and fall of the Weather Underground, the political roots of American conspiracy theory culture, the poetry of Walt Whitman, the underestimated role of nationalism in the ideology of Hamas, and much more.
As a poet, I write about the underground, both political and cultural. My poetry chapbook The Impossible Costs More (2026) is part of a much larger, unfinished project which tells the entire story of New York City through poetic vignettes of Gotham’s dispossessed and angry underclasses in moments of unrest and upheaval. Like every poet, I also occasionally write about love and heartbreak.
From 2019 to 2023, I recorded and performed as Hank Crocodile, an ambitious project that blended ambient, noise, and folk music. Inspired by musicians like Tim Hecker, Brian Eno, and William Basinski, I used analog instruments (electric and acoustic guitars, harmonicas, a steel guitar, etc.) and the free audio software Audacity to create three experimental albums, Vostok #1 (2019), Argonne (2019), and Blessed Be the Old Gods (2020). I am still making and recording music under a new, currently untitled project.
